Board approves resolution to begin Dr. Haptonstall’s employment as superintendent July 1

Grand Junction, CO – The District 51 School Board is happy to announce Dr. Ken Haptonstall will begin service as District 51’s superintendent of schools on July 1, 2017.

Board members voted 4-0 in open session today, May 12, 2017, to approve a resolution for the district to employ Dr. Haptonstall as superintendent and authorized the board secretary and vice president to execute an employment agreement with Dr. Haptonstall, which will be signed Monday, May 15, 2017. Board President John Williams, who was one of four finalists for the position, abstained from the vote.

Dr. Haptonstall currently serves as superintendent of schools in Garfield County School District 16 in Parachute and has done so since 2009. He previously served as assistant superintendent in Garfield 16 from 2007 to 2008, became assistant principal of Fruita Middle School in 1999 before taking over as the school’s principal in 2000, and taught computer science at East Middle School from 1993 to 1999.

Current D51 Superintendent Steve Schultz will retire next month after 35 years in the school district.
