Clifton Elementary to debut new sports fields May 10

Clifton, CO – Clifton Elementary School will formally debut a new dual purpose soccer and football field, a kickball/Wiffle ball field, and a combination basketball and volleyball court behind the school building at 3276 F Road during a barbecue from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2017.

Clifton Elementary has transformed the patch of grass behind the school into a space for fun, low-cost activities year-round with help from an Activating Places and Spaces grant given to Mesa County Public Health from the Colorado Health Foundation. The grant helped the school pay for paint to create field and court lines and also paid for the barbecue, goal posts, and equipment students can use on the new fields.

Students can use the fields during and after school, but Clifton Elementary School Principal Yogi Cherp said he hopes parents and kids take advantage of the fields even when school is out this summer.

“We’re trying to promote healthy things for our kids and our families to do for little or no cost,” Mr. Cherp said, adding that he hopes families will take advantage of the fields when the Lunch Lizard summer food truck makes stops there this summer. The school also will host its Field Day outside May 22-23.
