Eight District 51 schools offering free breakfast to all this year

Grand Junction, CO – This year, eight District 51 schools are offering free breakfast to all students in hopes of giving them a better start to the school day. Kids who eat breakfast are 20 percent more likely to graduate from high school, score 17.5 percent higher on math tests on average, and attend school an average of one and a half more days per year than students who don’t eat breakfast.

Schools offering free breakfast to all students in 2017-18 are:

  • Bookcliff Middle School
  • Chipeta Elementary School
  • Clifton Elementary School
  • Dos Rios Elementary School
  • Fruitvale Elementary School
  • Mt. Garfield Middle School
  • Nisley Elementary School
  • Rocky Mountain Elementary School

Offering free breakfast at these eight schools is not expected to cost the district any extra money. The federal government reimburses the district for meals at these schools based on the free and reduced percentage at each of the eight schools who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals. With at least 70 percent of students at each of these schools qualifying for free or reduced-price meals, reimbursements typically line up with actual costs.
