R-5 High students seeking donations for class project

Grand Junction, CO – R-5 High school students are seeking donations through Monday, Aug. 21, 2017, to help them make a method of transit that can move on water.

Students in the school’s project-based learning course will research, design, and create a human-powered kinetic amphibious craft for a Trash HEAP Race along the Colorado River at the end of this project. During the class, students will learn about the history of human-powered transportation; the mathematics behind fluid dynamics, buoyancy and density; physics and the scientific method.

Students are looking for donations from the community for the following materials:

  • 50 gallon plastic drums
  • Wood
  • Bicycles and parts
  • Wheels
  • Tires
  • Large chunks of styrofoam and closed-cell foam
  • Large plastic bottles (2 liter, gallon, etc.)
  • Fasteners (screws, nails, etc.)

Please drop off donations at R5 High School, 455 N. 22nd St., Suite B, from Monday-Friday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. If you have questions about whether or not R-5 will accept an item, please contact the school at (970) 254-6880.
